my story

I’m utterly fascinated by the intersection, and commonality, of words & flowers.

I have such a dual love of both words and plants that my journey has been quite a circuitous one, involving periods of dedication solely to writing, then solely to plants, and then marriages of the two. From writing about creative homes and gardens, to flower farming, to floral design, to ultimately Parsley & Rue. It can be easy at times to think your path is crazy-crooked, thinking “It should be straighter!” However the older I get the more I realize all the wonderful lessons a crooked path offers: variety, delight, wonder, perseverance, strength, and, above all, curiosity. I’ve learned so much from both words and plants over the years.

I’m immensely curious about the magic it can bear when flowers and their meanings are brought to light.  Whether it’s a design created with flowers with specific meanings, or installations or arrangements that give meaning through beauty & emotion, creating with flowers is my way of helping people express what they are feeling.

    I am a member of the Slow Flowers Society

    — so one of my favorite podcasts is of course Debra Prinzer’s “Slow Flowers Podcast.”  Debra is local to the Seattle area, and I have this kind of pride-by-proximity in the fact she founded and spearheads the oh-so-important Slow Flowers movement. When people ask what it is I usually ask if they know about Slow Food. They almost always do. So I say It’s like that. But for flowers. It’s all about local, and seasonal.

    My bedside table always has a teetering stack of books.

    I am a huge literary fiction fan (currently reading, very slowly, Ministry for the Future, by Kim Stanley Robinson), but for the past five years or so have fallen hard for beautiful memoirs and nonfiction, too, especially Swell, by Liz Clark, the amazing Fi, by Alexandra Fuller, and Liz Gilbert’s Big Magic.

    My favorite floriography & florals books

    There are my floral design “heroes” such as Emily Thompson and Gabriela Salazer, and old gardening books like Gardens for Small Country Houses by Gertrude Jekyll. Then there are my favourite tomes on floriography — I especially love The Complete Language of Herbs, by S. Theresa Dietz, and Flowers & their Meanings, by Karen Azoulay. (Such beautiful illustrations, too!)

    My hands-down favorite magazine is The New Yorker

    Their writers are so excellent. I’m also going on year seven of submitting captions for their cartoon caption contest–one day I will win, I’m certain of it! In the meantime I’ll be chuckling to myself alone in my kitchen as I write them, and that has value, too.
